We love pirates – or at least, our idea of pirates, which tends to take the form of a bumbling, good-at-heart rogue spirit of the seas, a la Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean. Our picture of pirates is informed largely by pirate lore – embellishments, really, that leaves us with tales of treasure maps and buried treasure, hooks-for-hands, piles of golden coins and walking the plank. The reality of pirates is much more complex. Pirates were co-ed (yes, women, too!), democratic, full of theatre and often used to wage war against enemy countries. This presentation will uncover the truths of pirates and explore how we can incorporate more of the “pirate spirit” into our everyday lives to live a life fully adventured.
